Wooden Tablet Image Database [Character Dictionary]

■ Release of the New Edition (Flash Version) of the Wooden Tablet Image Database (Character Dictionary)

Six years have passed since we released the Wooden Tablet Image Database (Character Dictionary) in 2005. To our delight, we have seen a wide range of users, from ordinary citizens to researchers. In the meantime, our efforts to enrich the data have also brought problems for optimal use, causing inconveniences for many users. Accordingly we decided to upgrade the system and release this new edition, to provide a more serviceable environment. We will continue to enhance the data across all periods and regions, in hopes that this digital dictionary will be used more and more as a guide to the world of wooden tablets.
This system renewal comprises a portion of the results achieved through a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) provided by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, titled "The improvement of the support system to decode excavated historical documents and the development of the comprehensive research center database" (Representative researcher from 2003–2007: WATANABE Akihiro; project number 20222002). Additionally, this system has benefitted from support by the same funding organization in the form of a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research under the category of Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), titled "Analysis and extraction study on syntax and character mark pattern of wood tablets" (Representative researcher from 2008–2010: BABA Hajime, project number 20720182).

■ About this dictionary

The Wooden Tablet Image Database (Character Dictionary) is a database of character images inscribed on wooden tablets. This database is an epoch-making system facilitating comprehension of each single character in the context of the entire description of a wooden tablet, with links to the data of the Wooden Tablet Database previously made accessible by the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties.
Since some characters written on wooden tablets are indistinct, we use a range of photographic types including infrared photos as well as those made with ordinary visible light in monochrome or color. In addition, as materials to aid future deciphering of the characters, this dictionary links the photos with records taken down by researchers who made the initial readings (referred to as "recording notebooks" by the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties).
The Wooden Tablet Image Database provides a new form for the database of unearthed character materials, which we believe will serve as a guide to the world of wooden tablets. We welcome users’ comments and requests, so we may continue to improve the system and make it more user friendly.
